Hawaii 2012...Day 2!

There is so much to see on Kauai, even though it's supposed to be the quietest island. We had a great guidebook that I totally recommend.  The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook was amazing!  We tried out several of the restaurants they recommended as well as some of the sight-seeing and beaches they talked about.  Their reviews were pretty right on about everything.  On our first full day on the island, we headed out to do some sight-seeing on the West side of the island.  You can't drive the whole way up the West side, because Na Pali coastline is 17 miles of beach, but you can take a cruise along the shore, which we will definitely do on our next trip.  After breakfast, we  headed over to Hanapepe to check out the swinging bridge.  The bridge was rebuilt a few years ago, because the original one blew off in a hurricane!

Bill checking out the guidebook!  Next, we headed up the coastline and stopped at Salt Pond Beach park.

Then, we headed up to Waimea Canyon.  It's a beautiful drive up the mountain and there are a lot of lookouts to stop at.  I think we stopped at every one!

Bill driving our rental car.  I demanded a convertible for the trip, but maybe I should have been more specific with the rental company.  It was a convertible, but it was a Chrystler 200, which Bill called an "old man's convertible".

Street vendor at one of the lookouts.

There are wild chickens all over the island and they crow all the time!  Apparently, there were a few wild chickens and then when a hurricane hit a few years ago, it released some tame chickens that mixed with the wild chickens.  So, now they are everywhere!  I do mean everywhere...we saw them right outside out condo, near the beach all over the island, in the parking lot at K-mart, and they are not afraid of anything!

This was all you could see from the Kalalau lookout, because of the fog.
